Exercise vs PCI in low-risk CAD
- Hambrecht et al randomized 101 men with chronic stable angina to a 12-month daily exercise program or to PCI.
- Comparable symptom improvement was observed in both groups.
- However, the exercise group achieved a lower resting heart rate, a greater improvement in oxygen uptake, and fewer hospitalizations for worsening angina. Consequently, the cost per CCS angina class gained was less in the exercise group.
- These findings suggest that exercise training interventions should be included in the treatment plans of patients regardless of whether or not they undergo PCI.
